Mhawatte   -----  Algerian garlic meatballs surprise


My mum made this for my brother’s wedding dinner about 10 years ago. The guests called it Mtawam surprise, the Algerian version of Kinder surprise  (Mtawam is garlic meatballs without the egg) .

  • 250g of lamb meat (chunks) 
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 Bulb of garlic -- finely chopped
  • Salt And pepper -- to taste
  • 1tsp cinnamon
  • 1tsp cumin
  • 250g minced meat
  • 1 Medium egg -- beaten
  • 1 tbsp tomato Paste (optional)
  • 1/2 can Chickpeas – drained
  • 2 Boiled eggs



In a saucepan put  the meat chunks, half the garlic, salt, pepper, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and the 1/2 tsp cumin, oil and butter. Sauté for 5 minutes.  

Add half a glass of water and bring to a boil. Add chickpeas. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until the meat is cooked.

In the meantime, mix the mince meat, egg, garlic, salt, pepper and the rest of cinnamon and cumin.

Hard boil 2 eggs and then cut them in quarters.


Put each quarter inside some mince meat and form into meatballs.


Place the meatballs into the simmering pan. Bring back to boiling and simmer for a further 15 minutes.
